Theme: Gendered Hate Speech on Social Media Platforms in Ethiopia
Date: Thursday, April 24, 2025
Time: 3:00 PM EAT
Format: Virtual (Microsoft Teams)

Young Lives Ethiopia is pleased to host the April 2025 monthly seminar of the Children, Youth, and Women – Research and Practice Forum (CYW-RPF).

This month’s session will feature a thought-provoking presentation by the Centre for Information Resilience (CIR) on their recent study:

“No Safe Scroll: Investigating Gendered Hate Speech on TikTok and YouTube in Ethiopia”
Presented by: Felicity Cole-Morgan Mulford and Adyam Solomon

The study examines the prevalence and nature of gendered hate speech on TikTok and YouTube—two of Ethiopia’s most widely used social media platforms. It highlights the increasing risk of technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV) and uncovers harmful narratives, key trends, and the intersectional aspects of online abuse. The research aims to inform inclusive policy responses, strengthen advocacy initiatives, and support the development of effective interventions for creating safer digital spaces.

For over 15 years, the CYW-RPF has served as a vibrant platform for sharing cutting-edge research, policy perspectives, and practical innovations related to child protection, gender equality, and adolescent wellbeing. Organized by Young Lives, in collaboration with the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs (MoWSA) and UNICEF Ethiopia, the forum continues to foster meaningful dialogue and collaborative action to improve outcomes for children, youth, and women in Ethiopia.
